Tan
A Shot of Me
by Marivel Guzman
Sometimes I stare into the lens,
trying to look inside myself—
but all I find are scattered pieces,
hidden from me,
and from the world.
Still, I try to capture that moment—
that deep silence—
and all I get
is a shot of me.
The lens reaches only so far,
barely brushing
the edge of my skin,
catching a whisper of my soul
as it escapes through my eyes.
This is me,
searching for the other me,
the face I left behind.
A year older doesn’t smooth
the scars of pain—
but a bath of sunlight,
a little tan,
might do the trick.
Next time,
my camera will find
a new me—
all covered in cheers
and the light of the sun.
